A well-designed playground doesn't take much renovation. An additional layer of surfacing material may need to be added every two to three years (if shredded wood is used), but well-drained facilities will need less because less rot will take place underneath.
If installing more shredded wood surface material, take time first to relieve the compaction of the existing material--scarifying works well in these circumstances. This step will help to achieve a softer, better-draining surface when the new material is installed.
