Because it's not a horticultural system like turf, the sand in a volleyball court is obviously a lot easier to take are of. It does tend to collect cigarette butts, scraps of paper, and other litter thoughtlessly thrown into it. As one of the few sports surfaces typically used by barefoot players, the sand volleyball court requires some safety monitoring. Sand should be raked and policed regularly to maintain its quality and to remove any sharp objects that could be safety hazards.
The center of the court at the net tends to become lower than the rest of the court, as sand is progressively kicked out toward the boundaries. In order to maintain regulation net height, the sand will need to be pulled back toward the center. This task can obviously be performed with hand tools, but it's faster to use equipment like a tractor with a box scraper.
