Track & Field Facilities Maintenance

All-weather tracks do not require regular maintenance by the staff. However, the best way to extend the life of an all-weather track is to protect it. Cover the track with outdoor carpet or other protection when traffic, including vehicles, athletic teams, and even the marching band, are crossing. It's a good idea to use multiple layers of plywood to support the weight of heavy vehicles. Place carpet underneath the plywood to prevent cuts or indents from the plywood. Keep the surface clean by using air-blowers to remove debris, especially leaves. Another way to extend the life of an all-weather track is to make sure that runners' spikes do not exceed 1/8".

Cinder tracks, however, do require regular maintenance. The maintenance staff will need to level the surface and paint the lane lines for each track event. This process is very labor-intensive, and is another good reason to replace cinder tracks with all-weather tracks.
